Tour Dates: June 13 - 26, 2011

Day 1 – Mon., June 13, 2011 (Havana)

Arrive to Havana (via Cancun) and check-in to hotel

Day 2 – Tues., June 14, 2011

After breakfast and a brief orientation, we will begin a city tour of Havana’s history and culture. We will visit sites such as the Museum of the Revolution, Callejón de Hammel Community Project and Old Havana. End with a cultural evening at the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists

Day 3 – Weds., June 15, 2011

Today we will begin our Cuban dance and music lessons. In the afternoon, visit a school for the performing arts followed by a discussion with the Colmenita (Cuban National Childrens’ Theater)

Day 4 – Thurs., June 16, 2011

habana_flickr_leocaobelliAfter our music and dance lessons, we experience the fine arts with a private tour of an artists’ studio in Old Havana. In the evening, enjoy a dinner show emanating traditional Cuban style concluding with a discussion with the Yoruba Association.

Day 5 – Fri., June 17, 2011

Following our daily music and dance lessons, we visit with an urban agriculturalist to discuss food security, urban gardens and agro-ecology in Cuba. After dinner, witness the exciting Cañonazo Ceremony at the El Morro Cabana Fortress.

Day 6 – Sat., June 18, 2011

Upon completing our music and dance lessons, a visit with an environmental organization, Cuba Solar to discuss environmental sustainability and renewable energy. The evening will conclude with vibrant cultural performance and activities.

Day 7 – Sun., June 19, 2011 (Pinar del Rio)

Today we depart for Hotel Moka in Pinar del Rio. Learn about sustainable tourism and visit Las Terrazas Community and hike through the Ecological Research Center and Bioreserve. Enjoy a relaxing dinner at the hotel and discussion circle with our group.

Day 8 – Mon., June 20, 2011 (Vinales Valley)

Early morning, you have the chance to partake in birdwatching or other nature activities. We will explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vinales Valley, as well as Mogotes and beautiful Cueva de los Portales. Visit local tobacco farms and learn about agriculture and Cuba’s cigar culture. Later, we will check-in to our hotel in, have dinner and an evening tour of Manzanas.

Day 9 – Tues., June 21, 2011 (Matanzas)

We will begin our music and dance lessons with traditional instructors of spiritual dances such as Orishas (e.g. Oshun, Yemya), Rumba, Guayanco, Abakua (male dances), and Chango (lightning dance). Have an enlightening discussion about the importance of divination and Santeria as we meet with a Santero at an Ile (house of workshop). After a scrumptuos dinner, enjoy free time to explore Manzanas or for personal divination sessions.

Day 10 – Weds., June 22, 2011

After our dance and music lessons, we have an overview of the importance of Talking Drum in AfroCuban music with a local drummer. Evening enjoy local cultural activities.

Day 11 – Thurs., June 23, 2011

After our dance and music lessons, we enjoy an arts lesson with a local artists then visit a Green Medicine Facility to learn about integrative health care in Cuba. Enjoy dinner and a cooking lesson at a local paladar.

Day 12 – Fri., June 24, 2011

Enjoy our last day of dance and music lessons followed by an afternoon at the beach. Learn about conservation efforts and sustainable tourism and end with an evening free to explore.

Day 13 – Sat., June 25, 2011

After a morning drive back to Havana, we will enjoy an afternoon at the Botanical Garden and lunch at an EcoRestaurant. Enjoy a farewell dinner with our Cuban guides and an evening free for dancing or other festivity.

Day 14 – Sun., June 26, 2011

Fly back to Cancun and return home.
