A Dancer's Journey Through Cuba

Guest EcoArtist, Jacinta Vlach (artistic director of Liberation Dance Theater) will help you explore Cuban dance, music and culture. This cultural exchange program will provide opportunities for artists, students, and educators to study intensively with renowned Cuban dancers and musicians in Havana and Santiago de Cuba. Participants will have the unique opportunity to engage in dialogue with cultural activists and gain a deeper understanding of Cuban culture and artistic practice. You will learn about traditional forms in historical contexts and how it relates to present day Cuba.
Itinerary
Tour Dates: Oct. 15-27, 2012
Day 1: Mon. Oct. 15, 2012 - Havana
Arrive to Havana via Cancun. Check into hotel and welcome dinner.
Day 2: Tues. Oct. 16, 2012 - Havana
Breakfast at hotel followed by a guided Old Havana City Tour. After lunch, enjoy a possible rumba party and visit to the artists’ community of Callejon de Hamel. Dinner at El Ajibe and the evening free to relax, attend cultural performance or possible viewing of the Contemporary Dance Festival.
Day 3: Weds. Oct. 17 - Havana
This morning start with dance classes taught by a local dance company. In the afternoon, continue with music lesson and Bata and Conga overview. Then, visit the Yoruba Association to learn about Santeria and Orishas followed by dinner at El Templete. The evening is free to attend a cultural event or salsa/jazz club.
Day 4: Thurs. Oct. 18 - Havana
After breakfast, continue dance and music classes. In the late afternoon, visit Muraleando, another amazing artist community. Dinner at La Imprenta and free evening.
Day 5: Fri. Oct. 19 - Havana
After dance and music lessons, enjoy meeting with UNEAC, a writers association and outdoor patio providing entertainment by local musicians and poets. Dinner at a Cuban-Chinese restaurant and free evening.
Day 6: Sat. Oct. 20 - Havana/ Santiago de Cuba
After breakfast, take an early am flight to Santiago de Cuba. Enjoy a city tour and cultural activities. Dinner at hotel Las Americas and free night to explore.
Day 7: Sun. Oct. 21 - Santiago de Cuba
Today, Guest EcoArtist (and possible other tour participants) will teach a free dance workshop for local youth. The workshop provides a cultural exchange and chance to teach American dance genres. Rest of the day free to go to the beach or explore.
Day 8: Mon. Oct. 22 - Santiago de Cuba
Today, begin dance classes with La Compañìa Teatro de la Danza del Caribe. In the afternoon, take music lessons and visit the Centro Tumba Francesa. Dinner and cultural show recommendation for free time (e.g. Casa de las Tradiciones).
Day 9: Tues. Oct. 23 - Santiago de Cuba
Continue dance and music classes with La Compañìa Teatro de la Danza del Caribe. In the afternoon, visit with Cutumba Dance Company or other community visit. Dinner and cultural activity.
Day 10: Wedn. Oct. 24- Santiago de Cuba
Continue dance and music classes, followed by community social project visit and cultural activity.
Day 11: Thurs. Oct. 25 - Santiago de Cuba
Continue dance and music classes, followed by community social project visit and cultural activity.
Day 12: Fri. Oct. 26 - Santiago de Cuba
Continue dance and music classes, followed by closing meeting, farewell dinner and group party.
Day 13: Sat. Oct. 27 - Santiago de Cuba/Havana
Early am flight back to Havana and return home.

This trip is for Intermediate – Professional level dancers (no beginners because the lessons will be geared towards people with previous dance background). Lessons will include some of the following dance styles; Afro-Folklorico (Palo, Orisha Dance), Afro-Cuban Modern, Rumba, Salsa Rueda, Son, Hip-Hop Cubano.

• Double room accommodations in 3-4 star hotel (this is based on Cuban standards)
• Transportation by private, air-conditioned motor coach as well as transfers for group as appropriate.
• Global Exchange/EcoArts Tour trip representative to accompany the group from Havana through the whole touring period and/or English speaking, tour guide(s) to accompany the group throughout the touring period.
• Preparatory reading materials.
• Admission and fees to museums, program activities and approximately 23 hours of dance and music classes
• RT flight from Cancun to Havana
• RT flight from Havana to Santiago
• Honoraria for speakers and donations to organizations
• Global Exchange annual membership fee of $35 (this amount is tax deductible)
• Two meals a day

The price does NOT include
• Extra baggage fees: Baggage allowance is two checked baggage with linear dimensions totaling 55'' (the sum of the three dimensions), providing all pieces do not exceed 44 pounds. 1 hand luggage piece is allowed and is the responsibility of the passenger throughout.

• Room service charges
• Gratuities to the bellboys and waiters, and your guide and driver (recommended to budget $100 per person) and for dancers
• Gratuities for the guides and drivers (we suggest $20-30 per person).
• Extra Beverages and one meal a day
• Cuban airport taxes ( $25 CUC)
• Travel Insurance (We strongly advise that each participant arrange for their own travel insurance).
Reserve Your Space
Deposit: A $500 non-refundable deposit (that is included in the total tour cost) and registration forms are required from each tour participant by July 15, 2012. The deposit secures a participant’s reservation.

Jacinta Vlach
The founder and artistic director of Liberation Dance Theater (LDT). Founded in 2007, LDT explores contemporary social issues and brings them to life through dance, theater and dialogue. Jacinta was a Instituto Sacatar fellow and selected as the San Francisco Bay Area Guardian’s ‘Best Emerging Artist’. She draws upon movement from African, Latin, contemporary and street dance to create physical narrative for issues addressing identity politics, gender disparities and economic marginalization.
